Resident doctors in England will receive a pay uplift, dated back to 01 Apr 2025. Doctors employed according to the 2016 Terms & Conditions can use the calculator below to determine your new salary for your current placement, and your backpay due.
Pay for 2025
Resident doctors will receive an uplift of 4% + £750 to basic pay in Aug 2025. A backpayment will be due for any work between 01 Apr 2025 and 31 Jul 2025. Flexible pay premia are also uplifted by 4%.

Whilst in most cases this shouldn't change individual uplift values by more than a few pounds, it is important to note that these values will not always be exact. What will my backdated pay uplift take-home pay be?
Determining the exact value of your take-home pay requires a huge amount of personal information, including your tax code, pension contributions, student loan, and various other personal details. This is because your lump sum will be subject to all the standard taxes and deductions of your usual monthly income.
However, most doctors will receive a lump sum of roughly 50-80% of the value of their gross pay uplift value.
When will I receive my back-dated lump sum?
The pay uplift is due to be paid in Aug 2025. You will receive a lump sum back payment for any work from 01 Apr 2025 to 31 Jul 2025, and your salary from 01 Aug 2025 onwards will be based on the new uplifted values.
Does this calculator work for Less Than Full Time doctors?
Yes. Please input your actual annual salary values according to your bespoke Less Than Full Time work schedule.
I was paid according to the 2002 contract - can I use this Uplift Calculator to work out my backpay?
The pay structure for salaries based on the 2002 payscale is more straightforward that those on the 2016 contract, so we haven't created a specific calculator for this. For resident doctors in training paid according to the 2002 contract, you can find out how much your new salary and back payment will be by entering your basic pay in the Basic Pay box, and your banding pay in the Additional Pay box. Specialty and Specialist (SAS) doctors have a separate pay uplift to doctors in training so this calculator is not applicable to your salary.
I have been on maternity/paternity leave, how does this uplift impact my maternity/paternity pay?
If you have received any Occupational Maternity Pay (OMP) or pay for accrued annual leave between 01 Apr 2025 and 31 Jul 2025, the value of this will need to be recalculated based on your new uplifted salary. You can use this calculator to determine your new uplifted salary for any applicable placement (the placement(s) you worked during your qualifying weeks), then you will need to contact your Trust's HR department to ask them to recalculate your maternity/paternity pay accordingly. The value for Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) will not change due to this uplift.
